Male, age 50, 5'10", 146 lbs. Down from 199 two years ago.
Ran 1,500 miles in 2017, peaking around 40/wk prior to tapering for first marathon in November. Since then, been running approx 25-30 miles per week, focusing on speed over endurance.
Current PR's:
1 mile: 6:05 -June '17 (pretty sure I can get below 6, haven't attempted in over 6 months)
5k: 20:48 - November '17
10k: 42:52 - November '17
1/2: 1:41:36 - February '17 can better this now
Marathon: 3:24:10 - only run one, November, '17
The 10k, from early November, is, in my opinion, my best run race and is what I've plugged into the various race predictors. Based on that 10k, 20:19 seems to be the predicted time.
The 5k PR was actually part of a longer run during what was supposed to be a 20 minute threshold effort, but I felt good after an easy 25 minutes and wanted to see what I could do.
Not sure if it will help in predictions, but I tend to be very even in all splits. For example, my 10k time for 1st 3 miles was 20:44 and miles 3-6 was 20:43.
My last hard workout was this past Tuesday, with 3 sets of 3x400's. 1st set had 100m recovery jog between reps, 2nd set had 200m recoveries and 3rd set had 400m recoveries. In addition, add'l 400m recovery between sets.
Set 1, Reps: 6:04, 6:24, 6:28
Set 2, Reps: 6:04, 6:12, 6:20
Set 3, Reps: 6:04, 6:16, 5:36
My goal for set 1 was 6:25, set 2 was 6:20, and set 3 was 6:15. I was not on a track so was using my gps. Pace on my watch must use a moving average, so it lags a bit when increasing speed which is why I continually overshot my goals for first rep of each set. For set 3, rep 3, I was curious what I had left which led me to the 5:36.
Based on the above, any thoughts on whether I can break 20? I think I can, but it's not a gimme. I think I could run 6:30 and finish up with a 20:15 time without issues, but running the required 6:25 pace to break 20 might have me blowing up after a couple miles. We'll see tomorrow.
