I don't want to spend $400 on ebay. I'd rather look at websites each day and hope to get lucky. Any suggestions on the places most likely to have updated stock?

Stay patient, I got a pair on the Nike website last month. Running Warehouse also had them.

Disagree. Running is generally quite a cheap hobby. If OP has the money to burn on a really good pair of shoes then why not do it?
nike.com
I believe the shoes are more of a placebo for non-elites so like if you want to throw your money away but they are very overpriced.

+1
The price of a pair is the same as the cost of a couple rounds of golf at a slightly better-than-average course. One round at a really good one.

They are very good shoes. Possibly also a placebo. Definitely over priced.
But in the grand scheme of things, for me at least, $250 is no big deal.
I have bought them off Running Warehouse(with a running club discount code), Nike.com, and Jackrabbit. I heard they are also available periodically on Eastbay and Fleet Feet Sports. Good luck finding a pair!

...said the guy that had never raced in them...

I have size 9 & 10 in the red colour. I’d be willing to sell you a pair for $300.
I finally wanted to get one couple of weeks ago and I started checking Nike.com and runningwarehouse.com every morning and in about a week, my size was available on Nike.com. My size is popular at size 11, so I’d recommend checking early in the morning to get yourself a pair.

I don't doubt that they're very good shoes, but in no way is anyone going to improve 4% just by wearing them. Very likely a placebo effect. Times of the elites have not changed AT ALL since wearing these shoes. The 4% naming and subsequent Breaking2 project will be taught in business classes 30 years from now - this is genius marketing.
I may consider getting a pair from a friend at Nike for $125, but the Zoom Fly at $75 is almost more appealing - especially with a hilly course like Boston coming up.....
How soon will other shoe companies start making Nike Vaporfly knock-offs?
Nike Vaporfly Elite Knick-offs already around.

But is it? I'm always sore and getting treated.
Then there is flats (shorter and longer), light weight trainers, trainers, spikes (one for racing, one for training but if you race 800m to 3k you could have various race day spikes).
Clothing, for all weather.
Cross training gear. Gym memberships.
And if you want to race, registering is expensive.
