not a total blow-up, but wasn't there an Italian runner who had to stop several times inside the park and still won nyc?

Yes. Orlando Pizzolato was reduced to a walk in NYC in '84.

Geoff Smith also blew up in Boston the next spring and hung on to win despite walking and stretching.
