We're going to start our World and US rankings earlier this year and start publishing them this week.
Just looking at the first event the men's 800 I see this is going to be a super interesting year.
Curious where you all think someone like Bosse should rank? He won worlds but that was the only race he ran. 4th and 7th in his only 2 other DLs.
Contrast him to someone like Emmanuel Korir had the world leader, won the Monaco DL, but then got hurt at Worlds.
The rankings aren't meant to be whose season would you rather have (that oftentimes would just favor the Worlds or Olympics to the exclusion of everything else).
On the US side where do you think Clayton Murphy should rank?

Well... you ranked Centro first the year he won the Olympics despite doing nothing notable besides that. Let's see if you are consistent... -

That's not true -- Centro also won World Indoors and ran the fastest mile in the world in 2016. If he hadn't done that, Kiprop definitely would have been #1 last year. -

If he only ran worlds and won, how did he finish 4th and 7th in his other DLs?? -
I would put Amos #1 and Korir #2.
Close call.
Korir has the #1 world time and his 3rd fastest is better than Amos' 2nd fastest this year.
Amos has the #2 time on the year just 0.08 seconds back from Korir.
But Amos has 3 Diamond League wins (London, Rabat and Paris) to Korir's 1 League win (Monaco).
Plus Amos made the World Championship final and Korir did not.
Rank Bosse #3
Bett would be #4. WC medal and a number of fats times on the year. -
DL means much less in championship years.
Bosse = 1
You might be able to justify top 5 for Korir.
US
Brazier, Harris, Murphy, Windle, Sowinski -
Indoors usually has separate rankings from outdoors and shouldn't influence the rankings for the real season. Many top athletes skip indoors.
But you can make your own rules for your own rankings. -

Why rank the runners then when you can just list the WC finalists in order? -
How are rankings affected by one runner being a more obvious doper than the rest?

An unbiased person doesn't weight that.
But a Letsrunner will either deduct three ranking levels or give a straight DQ.
I earn a #1 ranking across the board by Letsrun standards.
Everyone's on drugs (but me) -

I struggled at first with the concept of Emmanuel Korir being #2 and Bosse #5 but Korir had 3 of the 5 fastest times and won the Kenya Trials and dominated Monaco. Once Korir is ranked high I don't have a problem putting Bett and Kszczot ahead of Bosse.
Same thing with Clayton Murphy being #2 in the US. He had a very short season but his 1:43.60 was the US leader and we did factor in him getting the 4x800 World Relay gold. -

Wejo, the problem is the inconsistency. Some years it is based on time, other times it is major performances. This year they based it on time. Bosse crushed everyone at the Worlds. -
It's a crazy event to rank. Although I like Bosse, I have to agree with the rankings.
He's World Champ but rankings are a season thing. -

But the circumstances and situation can change from year to year.
I think Season Rankings and World/Olympic Championships are two separate things. -
We try and be consistent. The people doing the rankings haven't changed.

#1 in absentia: Makh Daddy
I hope he's back in action next year. -
Clearly Boss should be higher than 5th. He won the most important race of the year, the race everyone peaked for.
Obviously such a low ranking us for click bait. Well played you got me. -

Fastest mile. I'm struggling to find his best in 2016 & he's never run anywhere near the mike equivalent of Kiprop over 1500m ..on a bad day! -
Obviously Bosse is #1.
That's like saying the winner of the Boston and NYC marathon in the same year is not #1 because some runners ran faster in some time trial marathons. -
Cool
You went with my #1 and #2.
And I see how the same logic puts Bett over Bosse.
But Bett doesn't have any big wins at all on the year. A few 2nds and the Bronze.
I see Amos, Korir and Bosse has three runners who each won at least one big race on the year, so I see them as top three.
And the first two had a number of fast times or wins while Bosse had just the one, very big win.
But anyone that would rank Bosse #1 is someone that doesn't understand the concept of ranking a season.
