I'd guess last year's champ could as well.

That's exactly why it's so rare for a distance runner.

It is rare? Just about every middle school in America has a half dozen 12 year olds that can dunk.
Anyone that fast should be able to if their hands are large enough to palm the ball.

But are they distance runners?

Simple math will tell you if that it true. Measure height and vertical and you'll have your answer.
Even elite runners can barely get off the ground and most are on the short side too.
LMAO lrc is hilarious. A 4:20 mile is hard but dunking is easy

You are probably correct. They do some athletic ability so they don’t end up running.
My main goal is life before I started running was to dunk. I should of focused a lot more time and effort on more valuable skills of game besides dunking but all the jumping drills and failed attempts payed off as I was able to dunk with two hands by the end of my freshman year JV basketball season.
Once I started running, I was able to keep that spring in my legs for a couple years, but then it started to whittle down to just grabbing the rim to now at 32 barely touching it on a good day.
At 32 you should be aware that it's not "should of".
Something tells me that Keith Kelly can Dunk a Donut or two.

Where the hell did you go to middle school?
I used to be able to dunk as a high schooler before I started running a lot of distance. Now I'm 28 and can barely touch the rim.
Allie O dunked once or twice in high school. Probably lost a few inches off the vert since then tho.

Don't let age or distance running be an excuse. I'm 34 and can still dunk (got it on video too).

Your equation is missing wingspan and hand size.
And while it's true that elites are typically short, it's absolutely false that they can barely get off the ground. It's simply not possible to run at an elite level without being able to rapidly recruit a lot of muscle fibers to quickly produce power, even as a slow twitch dominant athlete.

They have tested many elite runners vertical. They really can't jump.
Did you know a Pronghorn can't jump a fence?
