Michael Johnson one foot was a half size bigger.

Brooks would accept special orders for mis-matched pairs when I worked running specialty, that was 2009 last. I don’t know if they still do.

And he presumably dealt with this by wearing one different size shoe on each foot.

My left foot is a half size smaller than my right, but there is no way I'm wasting money on two different sized pairs. I go with the larger size and just deal with the extra space in the left shoe. I could see someone who is really competitive getting two pairs, but to proclaim that many or most runners do it is just stupid.
