after a 10k max effort race (a PR) how long does it take to recover? what do you do for the week after? how soon to race again?

My personal recommendation is if I run an all out 10k on Saturday, I don't do anything quality at all until Thursday. I don't race for 14 days after that max 10k either. It's not necessary. Now, I understand some college schedules force you to do that, but I doubt it's ideal. It can be done though, I mean afterall, you are certainly "recovered" in 7 days, but I just like to give the body a break from all out effort, especially for 6.2 miles, for 14 days. I typically did a workout on Thursday and Tuesday following.
For the weekend following a record 10,000 meter race I would recommend a 1500 at the conference meet.
But if you are not a record setting performer I would recommend another 10k and also the 5k. Can you hurdle?
