Thread title says it all. I'm running my first marathon Sunday at CIM. Never run more than 10 or 11 miles in my life. Haven't done any training runs in excess of 5 miles, most days closer to 3. But I have run every single day.
Over the summer I ran 16:30 for 3 miles off of similar training. I'm a 28 year old male.
Shooting for 3:30. Am I gonna be over or under?
Over/Under 3:30 @ CIM Sunday? No training runs over 5 miles, first marathon

I'd take the over on 4:30

Honest advice is that you shouldn't run the race unless you're okay with a considerable amount of pain/walking, and finishing way, way off even the ballpark of 3:30. You didn't train for a marathon.
-
Please post after the race Sunday. We can use this as a cautionary tale for other runners.
-
Please post again Sunday

Good luck! Sub 3 pace will feel like a jog!

I'm going out at 8:00/mile pace and seeing how far that will take me. Most days I run the 3 to 5 at ~7:20 pace, so I'm hoping 3:30 feels decently easy for the first half at least.

You're woefully underestimating 26.2 miles lol. Good luck, you should go out at a 9 pace. -
If this is for real, you seriously have no clue what's in store. The only way you should be going out at 8-minute pace off of training regularly at 7:20/mile is if you Gallowalk every half mile or so, hopefully stopping at every aid station along the way.

You're so fvcked I love it!

It's not really a question of what I should do, but what I'm going to do. I made a bet that I'm going to break 3:30. For better or for worse (clearly most think for worse) I'm going out at 8 minute pace and seeing how far I get.
Maybe that's a better question: how far do I get at 8 minute pace before I bonk? -
Based on your recent training, just over 5 miles.

I think your most serious risk of dnf is cramping or blisters, since you havent done anything near that distance.
But if you manage to avoid those problems, I think you could probably get near to 3:30. Bring some gu or something with calories, take advantage of water stations often and you may just finish without having to walk significant stretches. Without any long runs, dont attempt this with no fuel of some sort.
Keep in mind, the very early modern marathoners barely did any running too, and they sometimes ran well under 3 hours. They did do very long training walks, though. -
You'll never win your bet if you go out at 8:00 pace. Your first marathon you will slow down. Bank a little time by going out at 7:45.
-
I'm just imagining you must be around 30-35 mpw even to sustain 16:nn 5K speed (??) unless you had previously been well above this number or do a ton of other biking and stuff.
I figure you'll slide in right behind Kevin Hart's 4:05:06, and your 8:00/mi quest will blow up spectacularly around mile 19-20
I'm sure you can do a 1:45 half, tho.
Good luck, I'll be there too, also shooting for a 3:30 [my 2nd ever thon] and I have nowhere near 16:nn speed lol [20 flat or so 5k] -
I think you can do it. Everyone is underestimating you. Go out at 8 minute pace and just hang on. You must be prepared for a lot of pain, but you can do it if you are mentally tough enough.

15 miles. Miles 16,17,18 will be close to 9 min pace and by 20 you will shuffling. Last six youll be walking. -

Don't make the mistake of starting out too slow. Your main goal must be to maximize the distance covered until you bonk. The faster you go out, the more distance you will have covered until you bonk and are forced to walking. Which will inevitably happen. Good luck and keep us posted! Drop the hammer! -
