How about this idea- Footlocker's lets the top 5 or 10 at NXN into their meet automatically?

They tried this already... (top 2 from each region who had not previously qualified)

When did they do that? Not questioning your answer, just curious when they tried it.

Lane wants to defend her NATIONAL TITLE obviously. Tuohy had the opportunity to run Footlocker Northeast (Katherine Lee from NY did this for example) but chose NXN. Neither of the girls are avoiding each other intentionally, they are just picking which meet is best suited for them. NXN is similar to the NY races Katelyn has been running and Footlocker is similar to the CA races Claudia has been running.

Footlocker should definitely let some of the top NXN finishers run if they accept the offer.

Would there be many takers? Extending peak form for another week, and back-to-back weekends of travel for families to a race (rough for east coast people).

Best solution would be for the two events to merge into one somehow.

They should do this.

They used to do something like it, in the first year or two of NTN, where they took the top 2 athletes at NTN from each FL region (plus the top 8 from their regional qualifiers, as they had always done). They continued doing that for the Footlocker West region until 2007, but the rest of the Footlocker regions reverted to only using their qualifiers (extending it to the Top 10 to maintain the expanded field at Nationals).

It would be great for Footlocker, because they would then officially be crowning the best individual each year, instead of disputed "champions" every year. I don't see it happening, though.

They were doing that prior to the NTN/NXN Regional system, and stopped doing it because the NTN athletes were "only" team runners, and some of those team runners weren't as fast as the #9/10 finishers at the Footlocker Regional races, so instead they expanded the qualifiers at their regional races to the top 10 (was top 8 before) and stopped inviting athletes from NTN unless they were from the Footlocker West region states (because FLW and NTN was still on the same day), but that stopped after 2006 for FLW states and 2005, I think, for the rest of the FL regions (which ultimately led to NTN including individuals and rebranding as NXN in 2008).

It would extend the season an extra week for some, but also gives an opportunity to many others that currently don't have the option. Also, it would alleviate the FLMW athletes and NXN South athletes that are currently doubling in both meets (meaning FOUR post-state races, compared to 2 for everyone else).

The NXN invitees to FLN can always decline if they feel they are ready to end their season there.

I think most, if not all, would take the invite though. Free trip to San Diego to wrap up the season? Even if you don't feel like you're going to be at your best for another week after a grueling season, just the free vacation alone might be worth it (plus, who knows, maybe they'll have more left in the tank than they thought they would and end up racing decently well to top it all off).

The NXN meet was clearly inferior in that "era". It took years to build NXN. It would be quite different now. You don't need to go as deep as top 10 of NXN. Top 5 would be quite enough. You are only looking for the potential National Champion. If some/all the top 5 at NXN already qualified for FL in the regional events you don't go deeper,

How about the nike cockroaches crawl back in the hole they came from and all the best runners try to qualify for footlocker?

Tuohy is better enough than the rest of the NXN field I think she could cruise it FTW and still be 100% to face Lane a week later. Obviously not this year, but maybe next?

If NXN was a true championship they wouldn’t select California teams based on a power merge after 10 races over the course of 4+hours. Conditions from the first to last race can change dramatically. At Woodward Park.

Wejo’s idea would completely sink Footlocker. Not a single runner would want to run Footlocker regionals if they can go to NXN and qualify.

The problem is money and sponsorship. If they cared about the sport they’d work something out to have Footlocker nationals kids run with the NXN teams in the same race. Then you could crown individual and nationals champions at the same time. Ya know, sort of like NCAA nationals where you have teams and individuals all competing against each other.

That's too much racing for high school. Kids should not be exploited by cheap

You're right, NXN should demand that California switch to a single-class system like they are in track. Or, failing that, delay NXN a week so that California can have a regional (on the same day as FLW) and run nationals a week later (on the same day as FLN).

So your solution is to create a meet where the top teams and individuals run together like other cross country meets? I like the idea, someone should make that happen. Nike likes to invest in the sport, maybe they'd be up for it?
