First off, I'm a high school male senior that is 17 years old. I have the following PRs:
4x400 - 53.xx
800 - 2:02
1600 - 4:31
5k from XC 16:06
I typically double up on the 4x400 and the 1600 every large meet in track. I've not ran relatively high mileage from my coach, as it's typically more quality work. I'd say the most mileage I've done was during XC ~40-45 mpw or so. During track it's about 35-40 mpw. However, in the past, I've not ran much during the winter, little to none actually. I only lift 2x a week focusing more on volume with my coach. This year I'd like to make a jump in my times and I think having a proper base will definitely help.
My question begins with how much should I start out with and how much should I try to reach? Indoor season begins early February... I've been running recently but only every other day. I definitely do not want to risk injury or anything of that nature and I realize being consistent is key.
Tempos/strides also are brought into the question too. How often, etc. I definitely too want to lower my Quarter mile time as I'm the top 4 in the 4x400.
Any comments to how I should begin and build a base is appreciated, my main goals are: To split 51 in the 4x400,, and to run a 4:27 mile or better. Any insight is welcome, thanks.
