What happened with Brentwood HS?

I saw that too. Hasty is one of the best high school milers ever (4:01 as a junior), so it is downright bizarre that the school would put him out like that, much less the one of the best teams in the country. And why did the AD quit and he must have taken the former coach with him?? Something really weird here.

Who cuts a modern day Pre? Sure he doesn't have a sweet moustachio, yet, but cut him some slack, the facial hair will come in time.

Yes, it was really weird that Brentwood got away with flouting TSSAA rules for years. This is the first thing Brentwood has done that is right. Now they can pay all that money for coaching and do anything they want to at any time.

I don't see how anyone can justify letting kids on high school teams who dont train with the high school. It isn't sustainable. It kills environment, too.

These guys made a choice of private coaching over a hs team. They need to live with it.

And how did the kids with the private coaching run vs the kids under the HS program? Since it sounds like the private club is a contender and the HS coached kids are nowhere to be found in post season, I’m thinking “live with it” is something they are happy to do.

Someone really has a stick up his @ss about Brentwood. Look at the other two threads about Brody H. I think it's some jealous coach from the state, just now sure who it is.

There’s plenty of pissed off coaches around the state, not that sure about the jealousy.

Certainly 6 upper Glassman and developed runners would do better than a larger group of developing younger kids.

Well, they are, first of all. Second, I don't see the big deal. One size does not fit all and to the extent that running is primarily an individual sport, team practice is unnecessary for tactical or skill training.

I guess what Hasty etc should have done was trained with the HS team during the HS season "proper" (here its 8/15-11/1 roughly), and trained with their coach at other times.

Many schools have no coaching expertise, an English teacher collecting a check, etc.

Many real swimmers (for example) in HS train with their club team almost exclusively. A kid I know says he goes one day a week to the HS practice.

It won’t be close. LV, Milton, and St. X are all better than Brentwood.

Not sure if you're talking about me, but I'm from California and don't tend to scan through more than first two pages of the boards. I didn't see anyone talking about it and the article was written in a way to leave some obvious questions unanswered. I'm an occasional fan of the high school scene. I don't think it's unreasonable to not know what's going on at some high school in Tennessee.

Why not? How does it kill the "environment"? HS coaches focus on the best kids and making workouts that they respond to. Why are 90 kids doing the SAME training? I understand they cant individualize everything but, damn, how can you not let somebody be on a team because they are doing something they feel is better for them? Maybe they like to train alone, have flexibility, like to adjust training off feel etc... I understand the "team" aspect but are you really gonna shut somebody down because they want to do 10x800s @5k pace instead of 5xmile @5k pace? There are people who respond better to endurance, mileage, and threshold centered training. There are also people who run their best off lower mileage, more speed, and less threshold work. Yall say everyone is different but treat us the same.

They are more than happy to "live with it" and doing just fine. Indeed, I don't think they will ever run for the HS again. There really is no need when they can enter many track and road races - and even still participate in NXN - as a club team. Thanks!
