New women’s 100mi world record by Camille Herron of 12:42 (7:37/mi) at Tunnel 100 today in Illinois (previous record: Ann Trason, 13:47, 1991).

Impressive is an understatement. For comparison, the men’s 100mi world record is 11:46 by the legendary Yiannos Kouros (24hr record holder of 188mi). For those who don’t follow ultras, Camille was the 50km and 100km world champion in 2015 and won Comrades back in June. OK, I look forward to all the posts from non-ultra runners about how trivial and meaningless this record is from MEN who could not match this.
Editor's note: By our math, that's 7:37.6 per mile. Here is an article on her run.

Here is a tweet of the finish.

Honestly, that is absolutely remarkable, 100 miles at 7:37 pace is unreal for ANYONE yet a women, just ridiculous. Is tunnel run pancake flat?
-
The men's 100mile record is 11:28. What version are you accrediting Kuoros with? Road, trail, track?
-
Congrats to Camille! A most impressive performance.
-
And of course, congrats to Camille, awesome run.

Tunnel Hill is a rails to trails path. Flat or steady 1 percent grade. Faster than a flat road course because of the softer, crushed limestone groomed surface. Protected by trees, so negligible wind. Perfect conditions today. Not a true trails race. All world records in the future will be set at Tunnel Hill.

You got to be crazy to run 100 miles. A marathon is fun to watch and I see interest in it. 100 miles, f--- no! All props to her!
-
good lord, this is impressive.

Camille beat all the men by 20 minutes (on the heels of the big win at Moab 240 by Courtney Dewaulter).
Looks like the Tunnel Hill course is on a rails-to-trails bed, which means it's fast for a "trail", but likely slow compared to track or road. Even so, the time ratio to the track WR for men means that if the track record was equivalent to a 2:12 marathon, her record would be a 2:23 (just to give a comparative, I'm not saying either number is an equivalent). In other words, VERY VERY solid performance by Camille.
More than an hour improvement on Trason's record is insane. -

Camille's race was run mostly on a flat trail with some road, so it counts as a road record and the appropriate comparison is therefore to the men's 100mi road record of 11:46. Yes, the men's 100mi track record is 11:28 as you point out. -
Just an incredible time on a flat to slightly up course, 7:37/mile for 100 miles??? That is insane.

Way to go Jaguar1!
So is this the first official world record set in the Nike VaporFly 4%? -
Wow!! Great run.

Beyond comprehension
-
Terrific! Congrats Camille!
-
Woah. Insane pace
-
So happy for Camille! Insane time but not surprised. She held a sub 7 pace for Comrades and tends to do better on the less hilly/technical courses.
-
According to the clowns on here it doesn't count because she has terrible form and a bad diet.
-
Wrap your head around this lol - If you use mcmillan to try to predict a 12:42 100 miler, you would need to have a 1:02 half marathon / 2:12 as your predictor.
