We have an update from Keitany's agent who confirmed that the 'problem' that Keitany referred to was indeed her period - her first in 3 months. We've added that to our recap as shown below.

a new meaning for "bloody hell"
My former girlfriend set several PRs within 24 hours of starting her period. We used to call it her "PR-iod", and we welcomed it as good news. Most women it seems to be the opposite.
I am a man and it is difficult for me to relate to this. I did watch the elite runners race, both women and men, from about 400 yards before the finish in Central Park.
As a woman I can verify,m. I get cramps while running and feel awful. For me it’s 2-4 days before and usually goes away by the time Aunt Flo comes.
So she's a snowflake after all and has to come up with a lousy excuse.
Classless of her agent to say such things.

Since when is stating facts classless?

Master Class just isn't comfortable the natural bodily functions of females, please excuse him/her/whoever.
Paula Radcliffe had hers when she broke the marathon world record.
That's really rough. And the first time in three months probably makes it more extreme. Everything feels harder when I'm on my period. It's like the equivalent of 20 degrees warmer and 95% humidity. I think more people should be open about it. It's not like a female president has to run a 5-min mile.

or, "Bloody Mary".
Please don't use the word "update" some idiot will be on here starting a thread "Is Mary Keitany update?"
Though I did think she was sick or something.

What makes me uncomfortable is an agent that wants to take the validity of someone else's win away. Is it a valid reason that Keitany ran slower than expected? Absolutely. Is it something every woman who doesn't win could claim? Absolutely. Do they? Absolutely not.
There are many instances when stating facts is considered to be classless. For instance, if a person who wins a race tells the second place finisher, "if you would have run faster you would have won" immediately after they cross the line that would be classless, yet it is a fact.

Then you must be livid that Abdi won’t quit talking about his fall at the 5K mark yesterday!
I wrote a female running friend of mine to ask for advice on what manner this issue should be discussed. Here are her slightly edited comments.

Keitany was obviously off. Everyone wanted to know what was wrong. The agent is just answering the question.
Of course the agent is going to give an explanation if there is one. His job is to promote his athlete and get the highest appearance fees possible. If there is any reasonable excuse, it is his JOB to let the people know. There was a temporary reason she didn't do well and she will be back. Idiots.

You are just being paranoid. Her agent just gave an explanation on her "poor" performance, and he never said Shalane's win isn't valid. It's all your projection.
As for the instance you cited, it's not a fact, when it didn't happen, so no, the winner isn't stating a fact.
