How fast can I get at marathons? I'm female aged 48.
I came to running late aged 39.
Found I was naturally okay at endurance but struggled with speed.
Could do six marathons a month, running all the way, but still slow times.
Enjoyed doing 24 hour races and could keep going without breaks and completed three 100 milers.
I laid off doing lots of marathons and dedicated eight months to speed work and really worked hard. Was doing two hours a day at fitness classes that involved a lot of fast running and core. But even after all that, my marathon time was still 5 hours. No walking. With a 5k of 27 mins. I'm fairly slim.
Although I'm more interested in 100 milers it would be nice to get a faster marathon, but my body just seems more suited to endurance and doing marathons every week rather than getting faster.
But had contradictory advice - some saying I will never get fast as I worked real hard and it didn't happen, and others saying I can make it happen if I really go for it.
I now have a fair bit of free time for the next year so getting the hours in not a problem.
What do you think? What time should I realistically be able to do?
Lulu.
