Runner's spend so much time on workouts in order to get faster but actual mechanics might be more important as it allows you to expend less energy and run faster.
I've had horrible running form my entire life, I've been runnignfor about 30 years and have finally said enough of accepting bad form.
My cadence was 158 on distance runs and stride length was 1.2M and I'm a heel striker.
I started working on core, doing lunges and squats a few weeks ago and last week started making a conscious effort to midstrike and move me center of gravity right where I land.
So far my cadence is at 164-166 depending on the pace and I'm running, stride length is still 1.2Mish and I'm running faster with less effort. The downside is my knees, calves, and toes are sore as they are taking on a new workload.
My question is has anyone tried such a dramatic shift in running form and what were their results? Also, what drills can I do to mitigate some of the knee, calf, and toe issues that the new form is creating. I am a bit worried that I might end up injured but at 37 years old what do I really have to lose?
I'd like to break 1:20 in a HM and my fastest is 1:20:28. I wasn't making any more progress towards breaking 1:20 so it's time to change things up. I'm currently 6'2" 205 lbs if that helps with the advice, race weight is 195.
