How much is Patrick Lange's 2:39 marathon at IM World Champs worth at a normal marathon in good conditions

I think he could run around a 2:15. He is only 135lb so kinda built like a runner with a good stride. Guessing he can and will run a few min faster in Kona as well, prob closer to 2:35 which I bet he will do in a couple of years when pushed by Patrik Nilsson and Gomez.

I hope so! I don't know how much he had left in the tank at the end, but he didn't seem to change his form much and didn't slow down at all. He actually sped up after he passed Lionel Sanders, who was really impressive btw. Sanders was clearly hurting from km 1 of the marathon. I didn't think he'd make it to the end in the top 10, much less in 2nd.

He'd go faster if fresh but probably not as much faster as one might imagine, maybe 2:30 fresh vs 2:39 on tired legs and maybe subtract another few minutes for a faster course. These ironman athletes train specifically to be aerobic monsters. The training isn't at all geared to going faster over shorter events so I think the question of how fast he could go if he trained specifically for the marathon has a completely different answer. Sub-2:15 is reasonable in that case but I think it would take him a couple years to get there from where he is now.

I'd say about 2:18. His t.v. Interview after his win was " entertaining" . He was making absolutely no sense and they kept the mike in his face letting him jabber. Guy was clearly spent but they had to fill dead air time.

don‘t forget almost all ironman/triathlon courses are short. just look it up in strava, e.g. Roth is only 41,3k and Kona 41,2k

What makes him an IM champ is that the difference between his time after the swim and bike in brutal conditions vs a fresh marathon in perfect conditions is about as small as conceivably possible. So maybe 2:25ish (with significant potential for improvement).

the Kona run leg is a BQ certified course so it is not short. Lionel BQ'd there a couple of years ago and then ran with his mom.

The first Ironman was held in hawaii, so after they had races in multiple cities they decided to make that one the world champs. Also, now it's got a mystique to it and triathletes wanna race that tough course and feel the 60mph winds while riding or that 95 degree heat while running.

Not sure how much a difference but my friend ran 2:26 in his first ever marathon winning before switching to triathlon. In Kona I believe he ran right around 3 hrs for the marathon leg. He was in shape to run a similar marathon time to his opener fresh.

First, I can`t believe that Kona run course is measured and validated by any IAAF standards. Kona Marathon is not the same than the Kona Ironman run course.

Second, I ran Roth in a relay by myself, GPS shows 41,4k so it`s likely only 41,2k as GPS watches measure slightly too much. Even the new Roth run course is almost 1k short, although they could easliy handle the "problem" by shifting one turning point...

Third, It doesnt matter that much how fast you can run a single marathon when it comes down to Ironman racing. I do my 30-40km never slower than 2:35-30h marathon pace, so this pace is kind of "jogging" for me, but after a 180k bike ride..?! It comes down to what you can handle muscular. poeple are not limited because of their cardiovascular system at this point. I´m pretty sure they slow down because of muscular exhaustion and the heartrate decreases. that`s diffrent to elite/fast marathoners as long as they don`t suffer any unexpected cramps they are limited by lactate threshold and VO2max.

Well according to USATF, it is certified and that certification ends this year.

Judging by past performances in 10k road races, I'd give him 30:30-31:30 over 10k flat.

So possibly 2:15-2:20, if he truly is an aerobic monster?

Kona actually has a certified marathon course...if they put the turn arounds at the correct spot. That's why it's one of the only Ironman races where the run split can be used as a Boston qualifier.
