Shorter, Ryun, Kennedy, Deena, Rupp
I can't believe that no one has included Jesse Owens yet. Frank Shorter most definitely. Bill Rodgers. Joan Benoit Samuelson. Yeah, the last one isn't a man, but if there are 4 running greats to be chosen, those would be my 4 and gender be damned.
Bowerman, maybe? Helped popularize "jogging" in the U.S.
Lagat and Chelimo

This. But Ryun should be the most prominent.

shorter, rodgers, joan benoit samuelson, jim ryun
extra - khalid kanuchi, deena kastor,
I believe Ryun and Shorter would be automatic.
There are a handful of others that could be considered for the final two spots...
Most of the mentions are from the "ProEra" but the USA has a rich history of distance running that goes way way back well before the emergence of Ted Corbitt and Buddy Edelen ---two of the first greats that I had a chance to see.
And let us define distance running- where do we start 1500/milers, steeplers, or just traditional road racing ? Surely 3 mile/5000m meter runners are in the definition or are they?
I see Lebow and Bowerman mentioned are we including administrators and promoters?
What honors or accomplishments are needed to get your face on this mountain?

A 3:55.3 high school mile in 1965 gets your face carved into the bluff. Everything and everyone else is second fiddle, even Shorter and Mills.
Fvck it. Just carve a 500' tall Ryun sculpture into the Grand Canyon.

Rodgers, Shorter, Mills, Prefontaine

Mel Sheppard, Glenn Cunningham, Clarence DeMar, Horace Ashenfelter Abel Kiviat, JohnJ.{Kelley, and Johnny Hayes get mentions.
Marathoner Tarzan Deerfoot Brown was well know to even casual sports fans in the 30s and 40s
In 2000 sports writer Marc Bloom called it as Shorter, Ryun, Rodgers, Cunningham, Salaza, Mills and Schul,
Moh Ahmed, Cam Levins, Justyn Knight, Grant Fischer
Pre, Bowerman, Dillenger and Knight.
Bob Kennedy. Can’t add any of the newer guys without him. He started The renaissance.
