Anyhow, the talk about long term development vs short term results is basically about the use of high intensity interval workouts. Lower mileage and harder workouts, in general, will produce better results short-term (weeks/months), but at the expense of long-term development. Neglecting aerobic development, which is fostered by higher mileage and occasional high-end aerobic workouts, leads to an inability to improve long-term and a diminished lifetime best. This was evident with the training styles popular in the '90s.

Very interesting point thank you. I have noticed with some Australian swimmers that they are incredibly good at 18 years of age, but then level off and don't get faster long term. I bet your concept here applies.

Rupp has had what, one injury in 15 years? That is an exceptional stat at the top level. Lagat was also like this. Alberto learned from his own mistakes and upped mileage and intensity VERY gradually over the years.

Now he's only running like 110-120 with another 25 on the under water treadmill

In high school he did mileage and a lot if it. He did tempo runs, k repeats, long runs. He was geared towards building, building, building. Not necessarily peaking. not workouts to put him in the best race shape of his life.

He was Talent, mostly. Paying attention to the little things, like stretching, lifting, strengthening, and speed development. I watched Flotrack's NOP documentary and improvement of athleticism was a huge focus.

I feel like he Maintained Quality rather than rebuilding it.

For professional running, esp the 5000, 55-70 mpw would be low mileage

What is the correct way to do them??

At the 800m-1k reps, in the beginning of the base emphasize 8-10k DATE pace, using active recovery. Stop the session before you have to dig too deep. If this happens after only after few reps, you were above the date pace. Slow down the pace in the next workouts, and work up the volume of the reps, until you can do up to ~6-8k of reps, feeling like you could've been able to do a couple of more reps quite easily. A common mistake is that you go the first reps too fast, and you start to count how many you still have to do. Increase the intensity towards the end of the base, but still include some 8-10k pace work to support the faster paces. To support the workout explained above, run enough easy mileage with some lactate threshold/tempo runs. What's enough for you, depends from a lot of factors. If you're only running like 15-30mpw now, and you think that it's the highest mileage you can successfully do already after some years of training under your belt, put the emphasis on working up your mileage, instead of worrying about the workouts. Unless you're a sprinter type runner focusing on the 800m.
