I know a lot of former good to great college athletes, both male and female, who had great careers at middle and long distances, who then refused to hang em up because they felt that they needed to see what their potential is at the marathon... why? The lifestyle is more demanding if anything than training for 800-10k, and as far as I can tell there is no incentive beyond the desire to compete. That, in and of itself is a fine reason to continue, but if you don't focus on the marathon at the cost of shorter distances in your early to mid 20s, you'll never really know what you were capable of in the marathon. There are exceptions, sure. But a big part of the reason we've had a surge in great marathon times is more guys and gals running the marathon in their primes rather than afterwards. So can someone tell me why it is that formerly good runners feel the need to do marathons?
