Hello, Happy New Years, everyone!
Here’s how last week finished and this week began:
12/25-12/31:
M: took Christmas off; 0 miles
T: *attempted to do 2-mile warm-up, 3 miles @ 5:20 w/3mins rest, 2 miles @ 5:20 w/ 2mins rest, 1 mile @ 5:20, 2-mile cool down. I got to 2 miles of the 3 miles in 10:45 (5:20, 5:25) and decided to modify the workout because I was laboring to hit pace. I switched the rest of the workout to 4xmile @ 5:20 w/1:15 rest. Splits: 5:20, 5:26, 5:16, 5:30. Rough day yesterday and my pacing was all over the place. The 5:26 and 5:30 were against the wind, 5:20 and 5:16 were with the wind, but even then, I wasn’t feeling it. I’ll be running extra easy today. Total: 10 miles
W: 11 miles @ 7:11 pace (tried to go slower, but body just felt easy at this pace)
Th: 2-mile warm-up, 12x400 @ 5K pace (~74) w/1min rest + 4x200 @ mile pace w/200m jog rest, 3-mile cool down. Splits: 75, 74, 75, 75, 74,73,74,74, 74,75,74,75, 1min rest from the last 400 into the 1st 200, 32,34,33,34. Total: 8.5 miles
F: 8 miles @ 7:27 pace
Sa: 14.5 miles @ 6:46 pace
Su: 7.5 miles @ 7:08 pace
Weekly total: 59.5 miles
01/01-01/07:
M: 10 miles @ 7:13 pace
T: 2-mile warm-up, 5x1K @ 5K pace (~3:04-3:05) w/2:30 rest + 4x200 @ mile pace w/200m jog rest, 3-mile cool down. Splits: 3:05, 3:06, 3:06, 3:04, 3:01, 32, 32, 33, 32 (200s were into a tailwind). Total: 8.5 miles. It was raining, windy, and on a concrete track with puddles, so I’m happy with this effort. It felt easy and I could’ve have done more reps at a faster pace with less rest, which is good. The 2-mile TT another runner suggested was tempting because I would like to see what kind of 2-mile shape I’m in, but with the crappy weather yesterday, I’m glad I didn’t do it.
Rest of the week:
W: 10-11 miles easy
Th: 600m repeats starting at 5K pace and getting down to 3K to last few + 4x200 @ mile pace. Total: 8 miles
F: 7-8 miles
Sa: 13 miles
Su: 7-8 miles
Weekly total: 63.5-65.5 miles
@Jamisonmooresey, my goal race is the Naples Half on 01/14. I wanted to stay in FL to avoid a far travel, but after learning about the Houston Half on this tread and reading how many of you guys are doing it, I wish I had researched HMs outside of FL. By the time I found out about Houston, it was too late to sign up without doing the charity/fundraising entry. It would’ve been cool to meet and race some of you guys over there. I’m going to touch HM pace for the last time on either 01/09 or 01/10, which will be my last workout.
@Ben Barrows, that run and last workout are impressive. Way faster than anything I can do in training without it being a race effort. Best of luck to you! With that volume and intensity, you should fly come Houston.
@Matthias, just like Ben Barrows, your training/10K seem to be way faster than sub 69, so you should be good to go if everything pans out. The only thing I would advise is bumping up the mileage to 70+, but with 10 weeks to go, I’m sure you’re planning to.
@Smoove, looks like we aren’t too far off. I hope you have a speedy recovery from the cold! Maybe once you’re fully recovered, 5:20 pace won’t feel too bad. If I were you, given your 1:11:10, I would at least put yourself in the position for sub 70. Maybe go 2-3 secs slower than 5:20 pace for halfway and see if you can come back with a strong 2nd half. Maybe finish 69 high/70 low.
11 days out, guys! I hope everyone’s last hard workouts went/go well!
