I'm a junior in high school and my region championships are in about a week and a half. The top four finishers are pretty clear cut and I have a goal of taking top 5. There is thick competition for me including two of my own teammates who have been beating me recently. I can't sit and kick because my teammates have significantly better kicks than me and in order to do good as a team, we are pack running for the first little bit in order to avoid going out too fast which I often do. I ran about 17 minutes for a 5k recently and this is a 3 mile course (the traditional course is shorter but I'm not sure if we are doing the traditional course or not). I think that the only way for me to place top 5 is to break 16. This will be tough considering I have run just under 16:30 which is right where about 4 or 5 other guys are (with a bunch more at around 16:45). I think that I am in really good shape though and that it is just a matter of mentality. What is the best strategy for me? Remember that I have to go out at between 5:15-5:25 with my teammates and I can't kick as hard as them. I also can't do anything that might hurt my teammates. Any ideas?
