Arizona Basketball mile times

local college down the road used ot have the BBAll players run 3 miles with bricks in each hand. Saw a few break 20 minutes. I was impressed.

See article above or on Tucson.com. Looks like the Arizona Wildcats run a mile every year and the fastest is a 5:06 by J Cruz's son, second fastest being 5:17 by their last two point guards. Of note they had a 7 footer run 5:41 last year which is pretty impressive.

Given how much discussion there is on this on here thought it was interesting. Implies to me that there probably are some guards in the NCAA/NBA who could break 5 but not many.

Right, this seems likely that there may be a player or two in the NBA who would go sub 5, kind of like how you see middle school kids who can go sub 5 off of soccer-only training on a rare occasion.

If the entire NBA trained for distance running, who knows, you may have a sub elite talent hiding in the NBA somewhere, but I suspect most of them would only improve marginally over what they can do based only on basketball.

It was probably 6-8 years ago now, but the University of Washington had a 7 footer, Aziz N'Diaye who reportedly ran 4:51 in their mile. That is not a typo, 4:51. The guy had hands made of stone but apparently had some pretty good anaerobic capacity.

Brian Scalabrine ran a 4:45 mile in college. Verified it (or close to it) here on letsrun. Search the message board, you'll find it.

That is pathetic!

Me (a 46 year old triathlete whose worst sport is running) would be the second fastest miler in recent history on the U of A basketball team.

My 15 year old son (who plays soccer and who doesn't run at all) would be the fastest.

It makes you wonder.

Seems like ever three months there is some post about how the entire NBA could break 5:00. And how LeBron could run 4:20.

It appears that it is not the PR departments of NBA teams that are full of sh....

It is the fans.

They probably run it before basketball practice which is the reason the times are slower than expected. If you know you're going to have a hard day of basketball practice you're not going to run 100%

If all these guys would do in for a day's work out was running and getting ready to run the fastest mile they could I bet your times would be a lot faster

I'd have to think some of the fastest guys in the NBA could run a 4:30 if they had a full day to dedicate to it. You might even get someone faster. Kemba Walker John Wall pretty fast guys with a good Miler build

It teaches you pacing and is a warm-up for practice. At his high school you could NOT practice unless you could crack 5 minutes for the day, everyday.

I am curious, what makes you think basketball players are "out of shape"? You do realize that when you watch an NBA game or an elite Division 1 Top-25 teams that the athletes are about 200 to 280 pounds sprinting up and down the court non-stop, or until the are subbed out. Most people when they play with these athletes (usual college players, occasionally ex-pros, at the Y, local rec. center, or playground) can not even keep up for more than a couple of change of possessions. Elite basketball is elite.

Do you truly believe that a Russell Westbrook, or a Chris Paul, or a Derrick Rose, or a Steph Curray could not run a 5 minute mile?

I remember reading somewhere that former NBA great Ray Allen is now running marathons. How are his times?

Sorry, do not believe they run it before practice. I watched the Harvard Ball team run their timed miles before. They did it in the fall while they were working on conditioning, not a practice day.

The thing is, the college guys are in better shape than the NBA guys are, they work harder because they want that next level. Once they are in the NBA, well we know whats up, just ask Allen Iverson.

We used to run up a small mountain as part of basketball try-outs in high school and the fact that there were still 2 hours of practice/tryouts after the timed run was definitely in the back of our minds.
