situation: collegiate dual meet 1500m race.
entries: coaches can enter three athletes per event as varsity, or scoring, athletes but the races also include non-scoring, or jv runners (to encourage participation and shorten the meet’s length).
Is it ethical to:
- Enter a NCAA national qualifier as a jv runner to act as a pace-setter, or ‘rabbit’.
- The ‘rabbit’ runs 700m and drops out.
- Later in the meet the ‘rabbit’ competes as a scoring athlete in the 800m.
- Use additional jv runners to box-in the other team’s top miler (NCAA national qualifier) to allow your top-runners (one NCAA all-american, one NCAA national qualifier) to make a break from the pack with the rabbit.
- note: the jv athletes boxing in their opponent were talking strategy as the race progressed, i.e. “Don’t let him out!”)
