If Kipsang breaks the WR in Berlin, he is the best marathoner of all time

I have him as 1b to Kipchoge's 1a. Kipchoge is unbelievable. But it's close. If Kipsang breaks the WR (and wins the race), he will add 1 to every number on the list, not to mention knock out the champ.

And don't give me crap about Wanjiru (who only beat Jaouad Gharib by 44 seconds in the "best race of all time" and never even broke 2:05) or Bekele (who has only won one major and only broken 2:05 once).

What if the others break it?

Take each individually [Bekele and Kipchoge]....... and explain whether they'll also be the best ever.

Kipchoge certainly would be -- I'd say he already is, so this would just prove it. I also think he's the favorite.

Bekele...we love the guy, he's the best runner of all time, no doubt about it, but come on...in the marathon he's at best been Patrick Makau. He'd have to go 2:01 and win by two minutes, or something absurd like that.

No way.. I love Kipchoge, but I think Kipsang is the goat.

He destroyed Kipchoge in the 2013 Berlin Marathon, and the set a world record while doing it. That is the GOAT performance.

Also, from 2010 to 2014 Kipsang was undefeated in the Marathon, and in running in general. he didn't lose a race.

Wilson Kipsang is getting the least attention out of the three in the build up ... I suspect that won't be the case after the actual race.

Tactically speaking, Kipsang has to beat Kipchoge and Bekele with his stregth since he lacks their finishing kick. A very tall order against a guy who time trialed a 2:00:25. If he pulls it off, yeah he takes the GOAT crown off Eliud. I think Bekele has to hope that the other two beat each other up and he can take the win in 2:02-high or 2:03-low.

Nonsense. He has destroyed both of them before without that being necessary. I believe that, even though Kipchoge is a very intelligent runner, kipsang is even smarter when it comes to running.

Here is a guy who has run sub 2:04 4 times , set a world record, and has beaten his rivals.

Can't say the same for Bekele and Kipchoge when it comes to setting the world record and running sub 2:04 4 times.

However, Kipsang is 35, and I believe he is at his peak. Kipchoge, on paper( lol) ,is 32, so in theory he is the youngest, and has yet to hit his peak.

One thing is for sure, the kenyans will work together ( like they always do) to destroy bekele, and then every man for himself with about 6 miles to go.

That was a hell of a race, but Bekele laid off the surges and only won by 10 seconds. More importantly, it was the ONLY top class marathon Bekele has ever run. Could he do it again? Of course. But if I had to bet on one of the three to DNF/2:06+, it would be him. And I DON'T agree that Bekele has the highest upside. Ten years ago, sure, but he's (mostly) a different runner now.

Kipsang has to get old sometime. We thought it had happened a couple years ago; turns out it hadn't. Maybe he will get old this Sunday. Or maybe he won't...

The bottom line is that Kipchoge is the only one to have beaten both the others, has the 2:00:25, and everyone considers his London race this spring as the best effort of all-time (would have been 2:02:3x in Berlin). It's his race to lose.

You're counting a science project as real time? That is not a real time, so you can't count it. And all serious marathoners know that, so he is not a sub 2:03 guy. There is only one sub 2:03 guy in the world and that is Dennis Kimetto.

And Kipchoge dropped Kipsang London 2016, plus a lot of other stuff Kipsang hasn't done, like beat Bekele twice in major races, 15 years apart. Kipchoge is THE MAN TO BEAT.(Note I am rooting for Kipsang for the upset. He runs like I wish I could).

The men's marathon WR was broken in Adidas shoes the last five times, Mary Keitany ran the fastest marathon in ages in Adidas shoes, and the women's 10, 15, 20km and half marathon WRs were broken in Adidas shoes. Nike set out to break two hours in a "marathon" and failed. If it was only a question of shoes, you'd have to bet on Adidas.

And Bekele easily dropped Kipsang when Kipsang was running 10 seconds faster than when he broke the WR.
