I have pretty chronic arthritis in my right hip (left one is absolutely fine!). The consultant that i have seen several times says i have a simple choice; continue to suffer as I am presently or go for a replacement hip. nothing else he can suggest would have the slightest beneficial effect.
What I would like to know is if there are any readers of these boards who have had a similar procedure and if so whether they could do any running after the operation? At present I can just about manage a few miles, mainly on the treadmill, about 3 times a week.
I just turned 60, have no competitive ambitions left, would ideally like to work up to running 30-60 minutes 3-4 times a week with some other exercise on most of the other days.
What research I have done on the subject seems a bit mixed; there seem to be instances of people running marathons and ultras quite successfully after a replacement;other studies seem to suggest that activities such as running merely lead to the joint wearing down much faster necessitating another replacement in a very short period of time.
Please advise!!
