Let's say I quit my cross country team because of problems with the coach. Could I run some invitationals unattached ? Is this legal ? I live in Ohio for reference.

I doubt it but doesn't hurt to ask. My guess is they will tell you if we let 1 in we have to let everybody in.
yes you can.
there are some high schools that do not have a team or not a full team.
you can call the race manager and ask. He may call back your HS coach and verify then reject you if you are in-state.
If you are close to a state boarder, go across it and run. Different states, different rules. That is much easier.
That would be nice if it's permissible by state H.S. associations. Sometimes a H.S. coach can be a jerk and things just don't work out. But if the kid still has a passion for running and wants to complete, what's wrong with doing your own gig and avoiding all the coaching bs. Coaches don't know everything about teen running, and the "one size fits all" methodolgy doesn't always work for every kid!
I did this! For track it was much easier to find open meets but for XC you should still be able find some meets. Check the USATF and AAU schedules.
Just bandit the meets.

I heard at these HS meets any bandits will be hogtied and tarred & feathered. I remember talking to race director several years ago about bandits. He was a middle-aged, heavy set man with a mean look. He said no one dares bandit "on my watch." He said any bandit caught will be tarred & feathered and made to clean up the johns 😨

Not in NY State, most likely not in Ohio, either.

I agree with this^

I'm in high school and I tried to bandit a college meet once when I heard there was one near me. I was kicked off pretty quickly.
If you're planning on running in college, it wouldn't hurt to run unattached in some 8k meets.

If he plans on running in college, then he should be on his HS team. In my opinion, if I was a college coach and a kid was not running on the HS team it would raise red flag. I would wonder if he had an attitude, was uncoachable, didn't get along with people, were his grades bad, etc. etc. Even if none of those were true, you would wonder if you want someone that might have issues on your team.

I might wonder that but if their fast enough I wouldn't care.
You can in some meets yeah. Take Grace Ping for example who raced unattached as a middle schooler in some high school/collegiate/pro fields.
There are home schooled athletes that have competed and ran at NXN and Footlocker as well. Sarah Kettel for example, but I think she was part of a Homeschool running club within the state?
For Ohio they probably have the info here
I doubt you can run unattached but after skimming the OHSAA rules I haven't found conclusive evidence.
Here are a couple of obstacles though:
1. Bylaw 3-6-1: "(E)ach school's administration shall prepare an eligibility certificate listing only those students eligible under OHSAA rules to represent the school in each sport." - any Meet following OHSAA rules would not be able to accept you.
2. In district competitions the coach must designate 7 runners to represent the school. - You cannot run in these events.
3. Uniforms must match. - If you run at the same meet you would have to match since you are from the same school.
4. An individual meet counts against the entire team/school. - If you run a meet on your own it counts against the school max for competitions.

Yeah, there is no better way to pick up high school chicks.
Sounds like part of the IRS code bs!Let the kids run unattached if they want to!It may hurt their HS coach's feelings, but that's just too bad.Life has enough problems for some of the teens today, so why fret over something so stupid as to runnning unattached at the HS level!

Yes provided you are home schooled.

So
Who's everybody anyway?
Will hundreds of kids show up asking to run a high school race unattached.?
I agree with this^
