Which has tougher competition? I'm skeptical about Kilian's talent-he's won Hardrock four times in a row-but maybe I'm wrong.

To the top.
UTMB is approximately a hundred times more competitive than Hardrock in terms of strength and depth of the field. While UTMB has a very difficult course, Hardrock is harder as a result of the altitude.
This year's UTMB is widely considered the most competitive trail ultra in history. Hardrock has a small field with a lottery an no preference for elites. That means it'll continue to have 2-3 fast guys per year. Nothing wrong with that. It is what it is.
I just hate it when I click on a thread and it's about people who jog for hours.
UTMB is certainly more competitive. Probably the most competitive trail race, not much is close.
However if you are feeling skeptical about Kilian I'd recommend glancing at his Wikipedia page for an overview of results. He is the real deal, and has been so for a long time across several disciplines. He won Hardrock with a dislocated shoulder after popping it back in himself.
At any race he enters, he is THE favorite. Not sure there is another athlete with the same level of dominance. Maybe Eaton. The only knock against Kilian is that he is a supreme athlete who happens to be in a slightly less competitive sport, but I say that not trying to detract from his accomplishments.
Hi Sage! Good luck with your race!
Killian is the worlds best ski mountaineering racer, the worlds best mountain ultra runner and just made TWO ascents of Everest without oxygen in less than a week. He has won UTMB 3 times and Hardrock 4 times.
For the jackweed posting about jogging for hours, Killian is beating Max King in 3+ hour races and King is probably in 2:17 marathon shape.

I have some interesting news for you: 2:17 is not the kind of time the elite marathoners are running, unless you're thinking of the girls.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
