I agree with you. If the only requirement is to cover 1 mile every hour, you could jog a mile at the beginning of an hour, sleep for 100 minutes, then jog a mile at the end of the next hour. Repeating this a few times each night would allow you to get enough sleep to get by.
This is similar the sleep pattern of solo sailboat racing champions, they typically take 20 to 40 minute naps though, because they don't want to sleep long enough to get into "sleep inertia," which could be deadly in a sudden emergency. Our runner doesn't have that danger and can have the luxury of longer naps.
If the OP literally means that you have to constantly move at 1mph, then I think some really tough people might make about 72 hours.
