People in their 30s and 40s run marathons because they are too busy/lazy to run 5Ks.
People in their 30s and 40s run marathons for the sole reason of telling other people they run marathons.
It's pretty obvious. The average person has no idea what a good time is so any marathon is impressive and only former high school and college runners even know what a good 5K time is.
You might as well ask why do fat people run at all while you're at it.
With the OP's logic why does anyone but world/national class runners run at all? You are just not competitive if you can't make it to Nationals or beyond. If you are in your 20s and can't do that should you just give up? What's the point? Maybe the kid will figure it out someday.
I'm 30 and I run 140mpw because I love running and having an easy pace of 3:55/km is way more fun than an 8:00/km easy pace.

The OP needs to think about what he/she is going to do for the next 30 years? I assume at some point get a job and pay some taxes...after that if they can make it to track practice for the next 30 years and maybe 7 Olympics in the 5k? please document it I will buy the book-movie-shirt.
I miss some of the fast times ...but not really. The work ethic to run a marathon regardless of pace can be a monumental achievement. Suffering is suffering. Besides if you think running a marathon is expensive you definitely still live at home and don't pay taxes.
Karl said it best. In our 40s, the difference between a $150 entry fee and a $25 entry fee is negligible.

Why so much hate? It's challenging to do a marathon. even if you run slow, it is very challenging to run that many miles in a row and it's a personal challenge that many people want to conquer.

Because my Marathon time in my 30's is faster than your PR Marathon.
I'm happy to race the op' in Chicago this year...I'm 41 If they beat me I'll pay his entry.
I'm 42 and slow by the standards on this board, but I've run 5 marathons this year and still have one left before Christmas ; I love running marathons because the whole race experience is fun to me, even though, as someone previously mentioned, it's still extremely difficult to run for 42.2 km no matter what your speed is. I really like the training and having a goal to work toward. It's also a great way to see a new city.
