How from 14:18 and declaring WR shape in the 5k she ran 4th place 8:30???
By the way Hassan has the most irritating form I've ever seen. She looks like a big spider on the track with that form.

It's wasn't her key race.

Key race?? She barely managed to run WR pace for 5k. Looked heavy as hell. She's not capable of breaking any WR
Fatigue, she has been running well all season.
I'm guessing you've never run a distance race? It's called fatigue. It happens. The week after I PR'd in the 10k I raced a 5k at a slower pace than my 10k.
She ran 8:25 during the 5000 last week. But she had a really good rabbit.
Yes. One of the few Kenyans to not skip the indoor season as well.

Obiri's best 5000 is 14:18, and she was all in for that 14:34 victory.
What goes around comes around.

A week is not enough time for you to recover from a 10k race? You must be some kind of a sisi

And she ran cross country, so a very full season.

She has already peaked for the year, and the season is winding down. Plain and simple. The following race after the olympics or WC is always a dull, slow race.
That is why a lot of the top runners didn't compete.
is there anything to the idea that 3000m is at the limit of almost completely anaerobic but 5000m most definitely requires aerobic?
she is more efficient aerobically?
I don't think fast vs slow twitch comes into play at either distance though

She is actually a 1500m runner, which is why she is so impressive. This is only her second year at running the 5000m
That 14:34 by Obiri was a great effort. The first kilometer of that race was a very slow, Obiri went through in 3:19, then she went with Ayana's pace increase and had a great kick at the end. She ran the last 4k in 11:15, which is 14:04 pace. She looked like she had more in that race. For an idea of how fast that is, Ayana ran the last 4k of her 2015 world champ run, with a 8:19 last 3k, in 11:24, 14:15 pace.
I think Obiri can go faster than 14:18, the WR may be out of her league though. I think she just had a bad race in Birmingham, it just happens sometimes. It could be post worlds fatigue.
In all honesty, the womens 5000m record isn't that strong. It's not a weak record, but their a several athletes that can break, and Obiri may be one. T. Dibaba herself coule have run alot faster, she had alot in the tank of her WR, she ran her last 2 kilometers in 5:38, her last kilometer in 2:43, and her last 800m in 2:10. Had she gone out faster she could have done alot more than 14:11.
The first regular meet after a major championships a lot of runners perform poorly. A lot of physical and mental letdown. The medal winners in particular seem to be affected most -- Obiri, Simpson, Coburn, Frerichs. Not a medalist, but wheels seem to be coming off for Martinez.
There is nothing weak about T. Dibaba's record. Her sister has tried several times, including this year's pre meet, but couldn't get it. Obiri tried it this year I believe in rome, not even close. Ayana has been trying it since 2015, nothing!
After breaking the record, T Dibaba never got close to the time. And she broke the record in the middle of her track prime..

Obviously you've never run a really hard 10000.

It was amazing how mediocre she looked. But the same was true for Coburn/Frerichs. How do you run just 9 seconds faster in a flat 3000 as you do a steeple?
It shows there is a mental side to running.
Nah, the first guy has it right. T. Dibaba's record has survived many high quality record attempts, but it is worth faster than it's face value. The way she ran that race makes it probably worth somewhere between 14:06-14:08.
T. Dibaba actually closed in 5:33 for the final two kilometers... halfway was about 7:10. So, she ran the second half 9 seconds faster than the first.
In other news, Hellen Onsando Obiri has finally arrived. This is the first thread I can remember on LetsRun dedicated to her. She cannot be ignored any longer.
