I've noticed that the Ethiopian women usually never run in crop tops, but the Kenyan women do. Also, in the same 5000 at WC, from the Dutch team Susan Kuijken wore a crop top and bunhuggers while Sifan Hassan wore a full singlet and large shorts, both official Dutch team kit.
It's not quite a controlled experiment, but these things suggest to me that there's no functional difference in women wearing skimpier kit, so I don't think men are missing out on anything that matters by wearing full singlets.

Sifan is a Muslim so that may have something to do with it. What's weird to me is that almost all the white women run in trunks, but all the east africans run in shorts (except Genzebe Dibaba).
