Is 3 days before a race to close to be doing these? As in, will it have a large negative effect on the race? Thanks for any advice.

depends how many you do, I would just do like 4 to get a nice feel of race pace, then take it easy he next two days.
Less than 5 days before a race is too close to be doing any hard anaerobic training. Perhaps, if you just do 3 or 4, not any faster than 800 pace, and plenty of rest (not anything close to 60 seconds), you should be alright. I'd prefer 150's on pace off 5 minutes.

Maybe 5 days befor a peak race, but if you race once per week, you will have to do this type of training within 5 days of a race at some point in your training cycle.
I race about once every 2 or 3 weeks, and my season runs March to September, so I have plenty of time. I just wasn't sure what to do this close to a race.
I think I'll try 100s around race pace instead then and make sure I have long recovery. Thanks.
