So a tempo run is a run where you hold your LT pace for a certain distance or time. Runner's World says that this should be 30 sec slower than your 5K pace (my 5K PR is 16:46 so that pace is 5:23, therefore my LT pace should be around 5:53) or 88-92% of your max HR (my max HR is 203 so between 178-186).
Whenever I do tempo runs this never really works out.
Usually I go for 20-25 minutes (~3-4 miles) after a warm-up, at LT pace/HR. But it seems like I can only hit 6:00 avg pace for that time, most days closer to 6:10. I don't fill with lactic acid or breath very hard, my legs simply just get tired. Also, my heart rate never goes above 165 during my tempo run, staying around 160. Why is my heart rate so low even though I get tired and cant hit my goal pace?
