So I'm watching "THE LONGEST DAY" on NETFLIX and...

Pretty hilarious. The actor is obviously in front of a projection screen, and the editors messed it up somehow. Almost like someone in editing decided to prank.

on the other hand if this is your biggest problem then i think you're doing okay...

Me too. I was in the second grade. I vividly remember it today. I was thinking to myself, "Did you see that? Herr Feldmarshall ErwinRommel just disappeared from the rear-projection. They'll never win the Oscars for cinematography and special effects for such sloppy chroma key compositing! Heck, they won't even get nominated for editing." But they did. It seriously weirded me out a little. I vividly remember that.True story. ;-)

Hahaha. Unfortunately, he didn't oversleep on the morning of 12/7/41 when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor.

We don't count that one because the Japanese kind of softened things up the month before. Their cloaking device was made of bamboo and rice paper, but still did the job pretty well.

Thanks for the info, malmo! I too wondered whether it was just a bad iteration of the movie that was being shown on TV, or whether the same lapse appeared in the theater.

Two great things about old farts:

1) They witnessed and remember stuff that most people only learn about (often incorrectly) as history. In this case, cinematic history.

2) They generally smell okay.

I couldn't believe they cut all the Sly Stallone scenes swatting down the Luftwaffe from the Empire State Building .

Story is that they actually tried to get Ike to play the role. Apparently he was game, but just looked too old at that point (he was in his 70s).

Same academy that voted Braveheart best picture. Same academy that has no problem giving awards to all kinds of creepy felons.

OP, you're detailed oriented. Lots of great war movies (more realistic) on Netflix as well. There is one I can't remember the name of it right now (It was about a soldier who was stationed in Korea and got shipped to Japan to fight the Cold War then another country afterwards...) very heart wrenching. I believe it was based on a true story, I will do some research later to find the name.

The Longest Day is not a "classic." It's a hokey Hollywood war movie. John Wayne is ridiculous and too old. The song is stupid. Pre-James Bond Sean Connery is pretty good, but Paul Anka? What the hell? And even when I was a kid I knew they didn't attack Omaha Beach with Douglas Skyraiders.

The book the movie is based on, however, by Cornelius Ryan, is terrific and well worth reading. It's vastly better than the movie. His book "A Bridge Too Far" is also very good and much better than the movie they made based on it (which also has Sean Connery in it).

"The Last Battle" by C Ryan is also very good. Makes you glad you aren't a German in Berlin in '45.

Maybe the camera zoomed past him a bit to get a close up of the ocean he was talking about.

If Rommel had defeated the invasion of Normandy and crossed the sea and conquered Britain and then crossed the Atlantic and conquered the USA, they wouldn't have minded. They loved the guy.
