400 or distance?

9/10 times, if you even have to ask whether to choose 400 or distance, go with the latter to be safe. 400 potential will top out way before your distance potential will, which if you really wanted to, could be trained into your 30's before you start to decline significantly. The same cannot be always be said for the sprint game.

Both times are close to equal but you seem to be more of a distance runner if you ran the 4:56 off of little training and have run low 16s. I'd say if anything, be a mid D guy all around and you can 'specialize' in the mile but still run 800s and 4x4s often. And you'd do some good distance training and run XC, so you'd probably improve in all areas, especially if you lift a little and strengthen your legs.
