My Fenix2 lasted barely 2 years, and my fenix3 has had constant altimeter problems. Unless you want all the bells and whistles like optical HRM (which has questionable accuracy), then I'd get the most basic watch possible. My 5 year old Forerunner 10 still works, and I often carry it as a backup. I'd almost be willing to trade my Fenix for a forerunner 15 or 25.
Yeah I've also read not to trust optical HR. And my friend has the FR225 and says it's a disaster. Every few runs he logs on strava shows wild HR swings lasting a few miles, meanwhile, pace is pretty constant.
I've narrowed down my search to:
FR15 (but no advanced work-outs, sadly)
FR920XT (has rock solid reviews on Amazon. The 910)
Fenix3 (Perhaps Garmin doesn't skimp on their high-end watches and they will last?) (eff the budget, I want a decent watch)
I want the advanced work-outs because I don't have access to a track. It's so much more convenient to not have to measure out varied-length interval work-outs like (2x1200, 2x1000, 2x800)
