I've got a soft spot for front-runners but I can't think of a true 5k that's been run faster by someone leading the whole way. That's a technicality though because I know Bekele has closed a 10k by running a sub-13 final 5k. Anyway, two questions.
1) what are the fastest 5k's won by a front-runner. Has anyone done better than 13:08 leading most if not all of the way?
and 2) what's Chelimo's 13:08-fitness worth with pacers through halfway or 3k? Surely sub-13, right? My estimate is 12:55.
There have been guys who have led for 10 plus laps and didn't win but still ran sub-13.

Henry Rono led from start t finish in his 13:08 WR 1978. He probably led from start to finish in his 13:06 WR.

Ron Clarke ran 13:16 and he basically always led.

A week after running 13:22 solo, during a blizzard in Spokane (April 1st, 1978), Henry Rono travels south for a three-way meet at Cal. On a sunny Saturday, Rono runs the first of FOUR world records during FIFTY TWO races across EIGHTY ONE days:
1. 13:08.4 Henry Rono - sooooooooooolooooooooo
2. 13:58.0 Josh Kimeto
3. 14:03.0 Samson Kimobwa
(2:42.0, 2:36.0, 2:39.5, 2:37.0, 2:33.9)
I grew up idolizing Komen, I'm a big fan of Chill-emo, but Rono was on a different level.

Bekele did NOT close that 10k in sub 13 by leading the whole way. Haile made that race. Bekele was much less of a front runner than letsrun fans would have you believe.

Soloing over half a wr race is good enough for me, he has done plenty of front running anyway other times

John Ngugi ran a 13:11 leading big from 2:25 or 2:30 into the race. What makes it more noteworthy is that the race was an Olympic final.
This is another good one. Not as fast but 40 plus years ago in high humidity and close to a WR

What makes that even more amazing is that Kimeto was the reigning 2x NCAA 5000m champ.... Kimobwa was the reigning 10k WR at the time.
