We break down the men's 10k and 5ks for you at USAs below.
Some genius (not) at USATF has scheduled the two events less than 24 hours apart which seems kind of ridiculous.
Our women's previews will be up later today.

Scott Simmons thinks Rupp can be beaten.
"I do,†Simmons said. “I think that’s specifically what we prepared to do, win and make teams, and we’re well prepared. We want a race, we want a solid race.â€
If Rupp wins, he'll be just the 2nd US athlete to win 9 straight titles in an event.
This sounds like an or scenario for Galen, just too taxing that 10k
I think Leonard Korir can out kick Rupp. Korir has won a bunch of tough road races and is race sharp coming into the 10k. Rupp is only @ 2 months off of Boston and has never been able to stay with a hard sprint finish. Rupp will need to be able to push the pace and wear down Korir early to be able to win.
And they aren't televising the 10k, right? Only on the streaming?

Correct. Not ideal if you're on the East Coast watching the meet as the race goes off at 1:09 a.m. and can only be accessed through the NBC gold pass.
My favorite, 10-year-old Rupp photoshops made for my old buddies in the Dyestat Playground forum:

That was a nice jog down memory lane.
RIP Dyestat
Rupp and Chelimo won't lose.

Que?
Anybody notice that guy with no time in the 10k? Andrew Coley. What's up with USATF not sticking to it's rules? Don't you have to run a time to get into the meet? Why even have rules USATF. If anyone can run why not make it an all-comers meet?
I remember you. Dang, the olden days...
Going with Mead if he doesn't scratch.

Definitely fear Korir's kick. We don't have much of an idea what kind of 10k shape Rupp is in, but he'll definitely try to break away around mid-race, should be fun.
The only other reasonable option for scheduling the 10k and 5k would be to have the 10k the first night (80F or so and no sun) and the 5k the last morning before 8:00am(same or higher temp but with sun). It's been reaching 100F by 11:00am this week.
Dude's legit with a 3:58 mile and some solid XC results. Lotta hair. For the 10,000m is there an alternate way to qualify, with high placement in XC nats or a road time?

They are following the rules. Rules 11.3(b), to be exact:
"Where there are insufficient entrants who have met the qualifying standards and who have declared that they will compete, to make a final of an event
competitive, the Games Committee or its representatives, prior to the day of the Championships, may approve for that final a limited number of additional entries from those who have entered the event prior to the closing date for entries, but who have not met the qualifying standards for that event, provided that such additional entries be approved in the order of best qualifying performance. The Games Committee shall exercise reasonable efforts to notify those entrants of the opportunity to compete."
This rule is why Colley is listed as "accepted" rather than "qualified."
For further explanation, click on the text button that says, "Click here for an explanation of entry/declaration status" on the "Status of Entries" page. It takes you here:
http://www.usatf.org/Events---Calendar/2017/USATF-Outdoor-Championships/Status-of-Entries/About-Entry---Declaration-Staus.aspxRupp will win the 10k easily. His speed might not be what it was, but he is still a whole lot better than everyone else.
Rupp will run the final 2400 in under 6:00...nobody can hang with that late push.
Let's not forget Rupp prides himself on racing in the heat.
And that he's on a completely different planet than his US competitors.
They might as well hand him the title now.
