A big props to Alyssa Snyder of Montana State who came in with a 16:32.56 5000m pr and ended up running 32:58.31 for 4th in the 10,000m.
We didn't get Alyssa's 5k split but extrapolating from her 4800m (15:51.32) and 5200m (17:08.52) splits she likely hit 5000 at 16:29.9 which means she ran back to back 5000m prs.
It doesn't get much better than that. Congrats to Alyssa.
Snyder has impoved a ton as she ran 17:10 and 37:22 last year.
As someone who has run within 3 seconds of a 5000 pb in a 10000, I can say that what this young lady has done is highly aberrant. Congrats to her!
We found this article that talks about how she was "pretty surprised" by the showing.
“Pretty surprised by it to be honest,†Snyder said. “I got down to two miles to go and was looking around thinking, ‘Oh, man, they’re gonna eat me up the last 400.’ We ran that pace in 1K repeats in practice last week, and it was really hurting with three minutes rest in between.â€

I had been wanting the idea of official pb's/pr's to be re-analyzed for some time by the iaaf. Now just look at the last 800m of the women's 1500m in Rio where 1:57 was run by Kipyegon but her official 800m best was a lot slower (1:58). Heck Jenny Simpson did 1:59.2 but her official best is 2:00.45.

But of course the running start matters in the last 800m of a 1500m, much more so than in the last 5000m of a 10000m, for example.
Great motivation for those that have doubts about what big competition can do to bring out the best in yourself. Congrats to this young lady!

How do you drop 4 and a half minutes off your 10k pr in one year as a college athlete? What did her training consist of before this year? Leisurely walks?
This is NOT to take anything away from her accomplishment - good for her, congrats and all - but who dreams about finishing 4th?

She was dreaming of 8th, not 4th.
While she has improved immensely over the past year, the prior 10k pr noted is inaccurate, as the only 10k she competed in prior to this year was used as a tempo run and took place at Montana State which is at an altitude of nearly 5000'.

it was a great race to watch overall, I think Charlotte Taylor helped pull several to PRs much like Almaz Ayana did during Rio

Yeah but the times she ran last year wouldn't even put her in the top 5 for high school girls. Now this year she is top five in the NCAA. So it doesn't get MUCH better.

You've obviously never achieved anything of note in running El Quatro to make a statement like that. A girl with her PRs coming into the meet was probably just happy being there. Now she leaves with 5 team points, an AA certificate, and a fantastic new PR. I'm sure getting 4th to her feels like 1st place.

Physical maturity is one. Usually the most important. And a better training group. People get better every year up to a point.
She's a long way from that point
