I used to use a filter. It was a decent name brand. Katahdin, I think. It was a pain to have to sit there and pump it, but it wasn't too bad. Then one time it broke and I would have been screwed if I didn't have a backup. Been using aquamira ever since. It doesn't require any pumping, never breaks, and it takes up very little space. My experience has been positive and it seems to get very good customer reviews on amazon. Curious to know why others feel differently.
I think the technology of filters has improved, and you don't have to wait long to get your water. For backpacking, I like the squeeze filters that have come out relatively recently. But for a trip down the Mississippi, with all the effluent no doubt flowing into it from communities and farms, etc., the chlorine dioxide treatments (e.g. aquamira) are probably a better choice because they kill viruses that filters might not catch.
