I just rewatched Kipchoge's gold medal in the 5000m at the 2003 World Champs, where he outkicks El Guerrouj and Bekele for gold. (Clearly, this guy's got ridiculous natural wheels; or, at least he did at 18)
Then I rewatched Kipchoge get outkicked by a ridiculous Bekele finish at the 2008 Olympics (for silver).
Then I reacquainted myself with his long career as a 5000m specialist:

Now that he's cemented his status as GOAT in the marathon, I'm curious about a few things:
1) What on Earth was up with him in 2003, so that he could outkick two of the sports best closers of all time at their peak?
2) Why'd he lose that ability (to soooome extent) over the next few years, and couldn't hang with Bekele at his absolute best?
3) Are there any old takes on how he trained as a track racer? Mileage, focus, etc.? Did he think he was destined to be a great marathoner, or did he think he was a track specialist at the time? (seems odd he didn't excel at, say, 10,000 meters)
4) Are there any good (current or old) articles detailing his transition to the marathon in 2013? How he shifted his training, how he evolved in his approach to the sport?
5) Has he had the same coach all along?
It's incredible that he, Bekele, Lagat, etc. have been at such a high level for so long.
