Definitely has a spot on the women's list. Huddle, Flanagan, Rowbury, and Kastor also probably fit on there. If you're willing to consider 3k runners (from pre-Oly/WC 5k days), Peters and Plumer probably both belong in the conversation too.
Well Lagat is obviously #1, but its hard to count him as the "Best American" because he is(..was) Kenyan.
Excluding him i'd have to say Chris Solinsky. He went under 13:00 multiple times. He was a good racer and his pseudo-rivalry with Galen was very exciting follow. its really a shame that injury knocked him out at his peak. I sometimes wonder what he was capable of in terms of world/olympic medals had he stayed healthy for another couple of years.

Is anybody old enough to remember the old riddle on the Cosby show? It goes something like this: a father and son are in a terrible car accident, which kills the father and sends the son to the ER. When the boy is rushed into surgery, the surgeon takes one look at him and says, "I can't operate on him. He's my son." Who is the surgeon? (And the thing is, nearly everybody I know, even today, gets stumped by this one).
That was actually a riddle on "All in the Family". Mocking Archie Bunker for the fact that his brain didn't work that way.
The Cosby Show had 2 professional parents. No joke there.
1) Lagat is American and is #1.
2) Solinsky only made one WC team and no Oympic teams in his whole career, and finished 12th. I can understand him being on the list but he isn't at the top.
Who do you want on the list RI Red? Molly Huddle?
Dieter Bauman of testosterone in my toothpaste fame.
Haha what a pathetic website that guy runs. "All time rankings for athletes with a European heritage". Aka Baby Nationals.

It's really too bad Solinsky only had the 1 magical year, and it was an off year for global championships. I think with his fitness and his closing ability he could have absolutely challenged for a medal.
I think we're actually underrating Pre in this conversation for once.

Bob Kennedy was the first Non-African born runner to break 13. That should automatically be top 5 probably top 3.
Bob Kennedy's times and performance level, in an era where his performances as an America really stood alone, resonates deeply with me.

Dieter Bauman was the first.
Dieter Bauman ran 12:54 in 1997
BK ran 12:58 in 1996
Solinsky, Ritzenhein, Teg, Chelimo, Ruppyour list needs a lot of work

I would but Schul and Lagat in a class by themselves but everyone else (and a few others) can pretty much be lumped together with some combo of bronze medals, american titles, and fast times. None really stand out.
What do you think about BK's era vs. Rupp's? There was no testing for EPO until about 2000, when Kennedy was pretty much past his peak.
Hate to break it to you. I think BK was dirty.

I have book of riddles which includes that one. The book is from the 1950s.
In no particular order:
Lagat, Solinsky, Rupp, True, Chelimo, Ritz, BK, Liquori, Schul, Teg
