I understand why they don't have distance races in the dual meet schedule. No one wants to sit around while some kid takes 30+ minutes to run a 5K. But for championship racing and invitationals, I think it would be cool to switch out the 3200m for a 5000m.
It just seems redundant to have three mid distance races and no distance races. It also doesn't really encourage anyone to train kids to be distance runners (most programs I've been involved with just train everyone to be 800m runners and hope that they have a few guys with enough innate endurance to step up to the 3200m off of that training).
Would it be a good thing to add a distance element to high school track?
