Seems like it could be a nice boost getting your name called out, but someone told me it can actually wear you down after a while - each time you hear your name it can start to startle you. What you think?

it depends...what's your name
No
Why not? I've been in a few races where they printed your name on your bib instead of your number and found the encouragement great, especially over the last few miles. Go for it.
I think it would wear on me for 26.2 miles.
If you're concerned about hearing your name, go with something connected to you... state you live in, college you attended, a mantra, etc.
Put Yankees fan on shirt.

You can't run the marathon on pure hate...only the 800
Tried it for a Half last fall. Through eight miles as I was on goal pace didn't notice it at all. Last five miles as I gradually crashed and burned was horrified each time I heard my name, thinking it was someone who actually knew me seeing the plight I was in.

Never use your real name. Use "Buddy" or "Guy" or "Jablowme" or something halfway witty.

Dare you to print 'Rossi' on it...
Other runners might get it...but i would be willing to bet at least 80% of the spectators would have no idea.
Might as well put "Not Rupp Certified"

I was a spectator a few years ago at the Chicago Marathon. A bunch of people had their names on their shirts. At around mile 7 they all gave me a huge smile when I yelled their name. It was so much fun to see.
We then moved to around mile 20. Now when I yelled people's names, they all gave me a death stare. We all thought the difference in reaction from Mile 7 to Mile 20 was the funniest thing in the world.

Yeah, I was thinking when I saw this thread that printing one's name on a race shirt would be something that a guy like Rossi would do.
Didn't he have his whole family wear matching "Rossi Posse" shirts.
It does seem like something that a major narcissist would do.
Look at me, everybody!
