Just wondering how often should a younger runner race the steeple chase in a season?
Background: This is my fourth year coaching small college track, currently at at a DIII. I've had some success coaching the steeple chase in past years, but have never done the event myself or raced anything on a track over 3200 meters (and only did that race once.) We have a couple of promising freshmen in the steeplechase with potential to place high at conference. My current plan was to have them race it twice before conference (2 wks apart) with two weeks in between the second one and conference (will race a 1500 or something flat in between) as from what I've gathered it seems appropriate to only do 3-4 a season with weeks off in between due to recovery needed. We have been doing steeple drills and some hurdle practice a few times a week since Feb with some hurdling incorporated into workouts every other week. They just raced it last Sat and our head coach (who's not really a distance guy) thinks it might be a good idea for the freshmen to run it again this Wed to get more practice. We have one more meet after this a week from Sat and then conference is the following weekend. From those more experienced with this, is this a good idea to have them run the steeple 4 days apart or even a 4th time at all if they ran it the week before conference instead (6 wk season in total)? From my experience, I don't think that is a good idea to run it this much, but I am curious to hear other's opinions. The one runner dropped 34 sec in 2 wks simply from working out and practicing hurdles.
