Rio men's 1500 was a disaster for Kenya and a perfect storm for Matt Centrowitz. Elijah Manangoi injured himself in the semis while in the final, Ronald Kwemoi tripped and fell and Asbel Kiprop ran like a fool. When it's your time, it's your time.
Not so sure it was a perfect storm.
Centro is a wise racer. He was ready and educated, knowing sometimes these races go slow and tactical. He is a top educated scholar of the 1500m's.
A "perfect storm" would have been Centro running from mid or back of lead pack, the race slowing way down after a "normal" first 400 and the centro moving up by 700 out and then running the same speed 600m he did and him catching the leader for the win w 10m or less to go.
It's not like Centro went out slow, someone charged ahead and he had to slow the race down 3 times.
He knew what he was doing and made the race, dominated tactically and Took the win.
Likely his only chance to ever win an Oly 1500, and he was ready to win any kind or speed of race. Additionally he probably has the best confidence and tactical brain of any of the guys in that race.
His comments a few weeks later were spot on; his past had him prepared for anything they brought.
Having run so many tactical races in college, he'd learned how to handle it.
And he's fearless, possible more so than any one in that field...
I've followed his racing progress since he was in high school... He was ready to win that race, fast or tactical.
