I want to know who is going the cheapest and who is going the most expensive per mile at Boston. My total cost per mile run will be close to $100. I did the trip 20 years ago when I was in college for $22.60 per mile.
$1400 flights for my wife and I
$860 (2 nights down town Hilton)
$entry into Boston
$ food, travel, parking etc.
(Total cost around $2600+~)
2016-$100 per mile easily.

I'm not going this year, but I went last year.
Flights for 2 = $22.60 (used frequent flyer miles)
Hotel 3 nights = $500 (VRBO) in some old lady's house in Brookline.
Probably spent another $500 on food and entertainment, including a Red Sox game.
So I'm at about $39/mile.

I'm using frequent flyer miles too but using those is a cost and I feel like you should use what the price would have been without using miles.
YEa you can go pretty cheaply...
I'm lucky and the drive is only like 8 hours, so I carpooled with a friend and split gas costs= Lets say $50 each
Airbnb = $150/person for the whole weekend
entertainment= $500 for food/race cost/red sox game/fair amount of beer
around $27/mile

$600 meals
$300 expo gear
$200 taxis
$500 misc including race entry
Total $4300, $164/mile.
But, adding all of the additional expenses of training, could be much higher.
I am closer to OP's end of the spectrum.
Taking wife - it just makes it easier to justify all around, and she wants to be at the race with me (she actually enjoys the marathon weekend experience, and with 3 young kids, we are rarely able to get away).
Staying at Westin Copley Square because I simply do not want to have to deal with the hassle of getting back to my lodging after a marathon. Three night stay instead of 2.
$800-$900 for flights
$1000 or so for hotel
$200 or whatever it was for race
$200-$250 for dinner Sunday and Monday nights
$200 in miscellaneous meals and expenses
I don't do a ton of destination races, so the cost, while unfortunate and definitely a bit of a sting, just isn't a big deal to me.
I can get you a qualifier for much less than $100/mile.
Flight - ~320
Hotel - ~360 (staying out near the start this year)
Car rental - ~90
Race fee - whatever that was
expo/swag - 0.
Food/ent- ~ 200. I'm pretty cheap until the post race beer.

Bandit race $0
Kiss Wellesley College girls on way by $80 (cost of antibiotics)

I think the correct approach from an economics perspective is to allocate some cost to the plane tickets. By using the tickets for this event, you are foregoing the opportunity to use them on another event (economic concept of opportunity cost). Personally, I would average out the price of all flights taken over some period of time (including the $0 for these flights) and then use that amount for these flights.
