I am a 5000m/10000m runner for an average level Divison-1 school. I have PB's in the 5k and 10k in the mid-14's and mid 30's respectively. Back in the day I used to be more of a cyclist, but there were more opportunities at a college level in T&F. Scholarships opportunities appeared non-existent in cycling, if there were even college programs around.
So one thing lead to another, I focused on my running and stayed off the bike. I am still competing on the Track this season and plan on completing a few more bucket list items in distance running. But after the culmination of all of this, I've been considering making the switch back.
Anyone have any success in cycling after making the switch this late in the game? With post-collegiate running there are lots of opportunities to make a few bucks in road races and the overhead is, well, cheap. Running shoes and 30 dollar entry fees are about it.
I am curious if it's possible to make any money or even break even in cycling (at anything less than the pro level). It's also assuming that I can get my fitness to a level to be competitive... My thoughts are: Running- less competitive for less cash, and cycling- far more competitive for larger purses? And way more overhead. (Expensive)
Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate the input.
