So they should get 2.0 assists for a 3-point goal, while fouled, when the shooter then makes the free throw?
Should a blocked 3-point shot count as 1.5 too?
Should Westbrook's teammates get credit for letting him take rebounds? Only seems fair.
Also, you should get an assist if the other player takes a shot, not just if they make it. The fact that the other player missed doesn't change the fact that you did your job.
It's typically more difficult to get an assist for a lay-up or close shot vs passing around the outside for a 3 so no. Besides most basketball players could care less about assists.
An assist to 3 point shooter should even be an assist. It's usually nothing but a easy pass to a wide open guy. An assist is like a bounce pass after penetration in heavy traffic.

His teammates are guilty of ego stroking, but the reason is also to bring fans to the court. His teammates are sellouts.

Except if you passed it to the known bricklayer, then it's your own fault for giving him the rock in the first place.

Good point. Maybe they should give you 1X(shooter's shooting average) for each pass that leads to a shot. So, for example, you would get .4 of an assist for passing to a 40% shooter who takes a shot, whether that particular shot falls or not. Then you still get credit for creating the scoring opportunity, but that credit is proportional to the expected success of the shot.
Why do they even count assists in the first place? Smells of big government to me? Offensive rebounds and block shots make some sense a player valuation perspective.
At least cite were you got this 1.5 assist for a three pointer question.
Read the most recent Bill Simmons mailbag.

FIBA already has this.

Do you get a rebound off a blocked shot?
If you pass the ball to someone who commits a turnover, did you assist them in it?
