Yeah, that's why you gotta practice running by feel. I'm not sure because I'm not a sprinter, but i would guess that 200/400 runners practice running reps in different lanes to help practice this.
Yes for lane 8. It's all mental.
Lane 1 is simply you having to run a tighter turn. You have everyone in the world in front of you to chase and it shouldn't be a problem mentally.

Agree on lane 8 and that lane 1 shouldn't be a problem mentally, but lane 1 is a physical disadvantage because of the small but real increased effort required to run the tighter curve. I am sure that someone who slept through fewer physics classes than I did could do an angular momentum calculation to find the difference in perpendicular force required for the turn in each lane.
